MESOTHELIOMA: SIGNS & SYMPTOMS
The signs and symptoms of Mesothelioma (both minor and major) may not begin to appear and manifest until 20-50 years after the patient has initially been exposed to asbestos.
Mesothelioma aggressively attacks three specific areas of the body:
Peritoneal Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that attacks the peritoneum: the lining of the abdominal cavity
Pleura Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that attacks the pleura: the sac lining the chest
Pericardial Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that attacks the perircardium: the lining around the heart
The general signs and symptoms of Pleural Mesothelioma can include:
Shortness of breath/difficulty breathing
Mild to significant pain in the chest-wall
A persistent cough
Coughing up blood
The general signs and symptoms of Peritoneal Mesothelioma can include:
Significant and noticeable weight-loss
Swelling/distention of the abdomen
Significant abdominal pain due to a build-up of fluid in the abdominal cavity
Fatigue and weakness
Muscular atrophy
Bowel obstruction
Anemia
The general signs and symptoms of Pericardial Mesothelioma can include:
Irregular heart-beat/palpitations
Breathing difficulties
Night-sweats and fever
Mild-to-significant chest-pain
If Mesothelioma begins to spread aggressively, other very serious and distressing signs and symptoms can emerge, including:
Problems swallowing
Swelling in the neck
Swelling in the face
Pneumothorax: a collapse of the lung(s)
Blood-clots in the veins, which may result in thrombophlebitis
Serious bleeding in the body’s organs
Jaundice
Decreased blood-sugar levels
Blood-clots in the arteries of the lungs
